Why I’ll Always Have a Soft Spot for Christmas Weddings (And the Flavours I’ll Never Get Sick Of)
Christmas has always felt like home to me.
Long before I was designing wedding cakes, Christmas meant warmth layered over cold days — European winters wrapped in wool coats, glowing Christmas markets, the smell of spice in the air, and kitchens filled with slow, intentional cooking. It was a season of indulgence, tradition and comfort, where food wasn’t just food — it was memory.
Now, living in Australia, Christmas looks different. It’s sun-soaked and relaxed, filled with beach swims, long lunches, pavlova, prawns and garden gatherings. But somehow, the feeling is the same. That sense of togetherness, nostalgia and celebration still lives on — just with a summer twist.
That’s why Christmas weddings will always have a special place in my heart.
Christmas Weddings: Old Traditions, New Seasons
What I love most about Christmas weddings is how beautifully they blend tradition with individuality. Couples aren’t afraid to lean into warmth, spice and indulgence — but they do it in a way that still feels modern, elegant and personal.
For me, Christmas flavours are deeply tied to my upbringing.
In England, it was rich fruit cakes, Christmas pudding and the unmistakable scent of bread sauce — milk gently simmered with onion, cloves (so many cloves), peppercorns and baked into soft bread. That smell, more than anything else, is Christmas to me.
In Germany, it was Christmas cookies, candied nuts, marzipan and spice-filled treats enjoyed at festive markets under fairy lights.
Those influences still shape the way I approach flavour today — even when translating them for Australian summer weddings.
Christmas Wedding Cake Flavours I’ll Never Get Sick Of
Over the years, certain flavours have become timeless favourites for Christmas and December weddings. They’re comforting without being heavy, nostalgic without feeling dated.
Some of the Christmas-inspired flavours I love creating most include:
Spiced Chai Cake
Warm, fragrant and deeply comforting — layered with brown sugar buttercream or butterscotch for that unmistakable festive feel.
Pavlova-Inspired Cakes
A true Australian Christmas classic. Light vanilla cake, passionfruit curd, fresh fruit and crunchy meringue — perfect for summer celebrations.Orange & Cranberry
Bright citrus balanced with gentle tartness — a subtle nod to European Christmas flavours that works beautifully in bundt or tiered cakes.Tiramisu
Elegant, indulgent and universally loved. Ideal as a giant centrepiece or tiered wedding cake.Spiced Carrot Cake
Rich with cinnamon and warmth, paired with silky cream cheese or brown sugar buttercream.Mulled Wine–Inspired Flavours
Think gentle spice, citrus notes and depth — perfect for couples wanting something unique and seasonal.Candied Nuts & Caramel Accents
Hazelnut, almond or pecan elements add texture and that festive crunch reminiscent of Christmas markets.
These flavours don’t shout “Christmas” — they whisper it. And that’s exactly why they work so beautifully for weddings.
Why December Weddings Feel So Special
There’s something undeniably romantic about December weddings. The year is winding down, people are relaxed, and celebrations feel more intentional. Guests are already in a festive mindset, which makes dessert tables, shared cakes and grazing moments feel even more joyful.
I love working with couples who want to create something a little different — whether that’s a Christmas-inspired wedding cake, a dessert medley, or custom flavours designed just for their day. Those are the weddings that stay with me long after the last slice is served.
